The Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) of the U.S. Department of State

OES

The OES coordinates U.S. international oceans, health and environmental policy. OES promotes the full range of U.S. interests in the oceans and natural resource conservation. It also coordinates U.S. international policies on HIV/AIDs and other infectious diseases, science and technology cooperation, and U.S. space interests. The ESTH Section receives policy direction from OES while conducting its work in Brazil. For more information on U.S. policies on sustainable development, environment and conservation, global climate change, oceans, science and technology cooperation, space and advanced technology, and international health affairs, visit the OES website.

Regional Environmental HUB Program

Another important component of OES activities is the Regional Environmental Affairs Office (HUB) housed within the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia. This office, one of twelve in the world, helps to coordinate ESTH activities among the U.S. embassies in South America and OES in Washington. Of principle importance to the HUB are trans-boundary issues, such as shared ecosystems and river basins, and environmental and health challenges that transcend borders. From within the embassy, the HUB organizes regional conferences and projects on everything from forest management to satellite monitoring of disease vectors. The HUB Regional Environmental Officer's role complements the work carried out by the traditional ESTH officers stationed in regional embassies. For more information on the HUB and its activities, visit the HUB website.
