São Paulo, November 16, 2007 -- The Fulbright Commission and the US Embassy came together on Saturday, November 11th at the Galeria Olido to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fulbright Commission in Brazil.  To mark the special occasion the Fulbright Commission, with the help of many special friends, have put together a unique photo exhibit aptly named “Visual Expressions.”  Some notables at the reception were: U.S. Ambassador Clifford Sobel, U.S. Consul General Thomas White, Regina Silveira (famous Brazilian artist), Former Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Lafer, Former Brazilian Minister of Agriculture Roberto Rodrigues, Muicipal Secretary of Culture Carlos Augusto Calil and Municipal Vice Secretary of Culture José Roberto Sadek. “Visual Impressions” pulls together 108 photographic images that mark the convergence and divergence of living scenes in both American and Brazilian society over the last 50 years.  The reception accompanying the opening of the photographic exhibit was attended by both past and present Brazilian and American Fulbright scholars who have participated in this world famous scholarship and exchange program.

1) Curator of the exhibit João Kulcsar and the Director of Fulbright Commission in Brazil Luis Loureiro; 2) Former Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Lafer and Ambassador Clifford Sobel; 3) São Paulo U.S. Consulate General Cultural Specialist Maria Estela Correa and Municipal Secretary of Culture Carlos Augusto Calil; 4) Consul General Thomas White and Artist Regina Silveira

The objective of the exhibit is to compare American and Brazilian photographic published images from national magazines and newspapers.  Visitors to the exhibit can personally reflect back to where they were at the moment the pictures were taken.  Some interesting moments in history are reflected in the photos such as the contrast between the resignations of Presidents Nixon and Color and the Rights Movements in both the US and Brazi.  Other photos reflect on other important moments or personalities in history such as  the three-time World Champion Brazilian soccer team, Martin Luther King, the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the Revolution of 1964 among others.

Ambassador Sobel welcomes the visitors
